We are first introduced to Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38 -42. It seems that when Jesus came to Bethany there was an open invitation to stop and have a meal.  The incident of Mary anointing Jesus feet and wiping them with her hair is in chapter 12.  You may say that was after this and it was as John wrote this gospel much later so John was just relating to the fact.  The message given to Jesus was that he whom thou lovest is sick.  What Jesus said when He heard this is that this sickness was not unto death but that God might be glorified.  I am a firm believer that Jesus knew exactly what He was going to do.  Scripture says, “now Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus, but He stayed there two more days.”  Then after the two days He said, “Let us go to Judea again.” This excites the disciples and they said, “The Jews sought to stone thee.”  I have been interested in Jesus reply. “Are there not twelve hours in the day?  If a man walks in the day He will not stumble.”  To me the meaning of this is that Jesus span of ministry in type is like a twelve hour day in a day for a laborer.  This was only a part of that day.  For me the Lord has given me the gift of ministry so from my salvation in 1956 (now sixty years) is part of my 12 hour day.  It will end in my natural death or being caught up in the Rapture.
Jesus ends these verses saying that Lazarus is dead, but in verse 11 He says, “I will wake him up.” Then verse 14 says that it was for the disciples to believe who would carry on His work.  It is for you and me also to carry on His work.
