It is difficult to understand Paul in the first fourteen verses, whether it was his old Pharisee life, or his present life in Christ.  I have a lot of things to talk to him about when I see him in Heaven.
Since I was delivered from my old sinful self by being born again, I have found that now I still have a nature that I have to keep under control. We call it the old nature.  Galatians 5:16-24 speaks of the two natures as the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit.  I believe that is what Paul is saying here.  It is almost like a war going on within me.  What am I to do?  We find more answers in Chapter 8.  We must remember Paul wrote a letter.  Someone wrote chapter and verse numbers of years later.  It was wonderful what this man did.  We owe a lot to him.
Paul ends with this phrase, “Oh wretched man that I am.  Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” He thanks God through Jesus Christ our Lord. There is deliverance in Christ.
