Colossians 3:1-7

Our passage for today begins with the word “if”. It could mean “since.”  My preference is to use it as the King James Version does.  However, if you know you have trusted Christ for salvation, then you might prefer to use the word “since” you are risen with Christ.  When we are saved, from that point going forward, we are now the children of God and we have new life which the Bible calls risen with Christ.  If this is true then you have a whole different outlook.  We are to seek the things above because our Lord is not here but in Heaven sitting at the right hand of the Father.  Our affection (mind set) is to be there not on earth.  If my mind set is there what affection do I have for this world?  A better way to describe it is that our mindset has changed and we are seeing things from God’s eternal perspective and not as easily pulled into the world’s thinking.

Verses 3 & 4 says I am dead and my life is hid with Christ in God. We are not to seek this world’s philosophy because Satan is the god of this world.  (2 Cor 4:4) and what do I have to do with him?  Next we find that Christ is my life.  This is brought out in John 14:6 where Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life.”  If Christ is my life, then I am complete in Him and when He appears we will be with Him in glory (Rev 19:14).  To put to death our members means that we are not to yield to sinful practices which affects our ‘thoughts” and ultimately plays out in our physical actions.  The wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience, which is referring only to the unsaved people of this world.  The last verse says we once walked in this way, but it should not be true of us anymore.  Real salvation brings an inner heart change that affects not only our thought life but the resulting actions.  We are to live our lives as the heavenly people we now are.
