What Moses wants to know is that God will be with him even though Israel has sinned in making the golden calf.  God answers, “My presence will go with you.” Moses answers, “If your presence doesn’t go with me don’t bring me from here.”
Moses then asks God to show him His glory.  God then puts Moses in the cleft of the rock and God symbolically shows him His back parts.  Fannie Crosby made a wonderful song out of this. It says He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock and covers me there with His hand.
To me God’s presence is the Holy Spirit who lives within me.  I must realize His presence always.  Otherwise there is something wrong with me not the Holy Spirit of God.  I don’t want to be carried about without the presence of my God.
I am sure here that Moses never thought Canaan would be forty years away and that he would not even make it into the land.  There is no use anticipating what the end of our journey will be like.
