In our reading yesterday Elijah and the people, newly converted in thoughts about God being really God, killed 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah. Next he sends Ahab a message that rain was coming. Yet according to verse 42 he seems to have no word from God. That is real confidence that God will answer his prayer. I smile at his prayer posture. At 84 I don’t have the faculties but I confess I never prayed that way. He then tells his servant to go out and look towards the sea. Now after seven times the servant sees a little cloud the size of a man’s hand. He takes this as a sign that it will be pouring down rain very soon so he tells his servant to tell Ahab to get on home so the rain would not stop him. When the rain came Elijah ran before Ahab’s’ chariot all the way to his home.
After that great victory Elijah gets a note from Jezebel that she was going to
kill him. This shook him up so badly that he begins to run finally ending up at Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.
Now what of this can I get for myself? First that Elijah was human just like me. He does work in different ways, but He is the same God.
