Isaiah 51:1-16

There are some interesting terms and phrases in this passage for today.  The first is “hearken” or listen.  We can even be Christians and not be listening to what God has to say to us through His Word.  The next phrase is “look unto Abraham.”  He is known as the father of the faithful.  I hope I am a faithful Christian.  Abraham was called out of that wicked city Ur of the Chaldeas. He obeyed God and got up and left with his wife and all his belongings not knowing where he was going!  Then we have the term “Zion” which I believe refers to the city of the faithful ones.  There is another phrase, “give ear” much like the word hearken.  Jesus used this in the four gospels and He said it to all the seven Churches in Revelation.  He that hath an ear let him hear.  We can get so wrapped up in the things of this world that we don’t hear what God has to say.

“Lift up your eyes” is another important phrase.  Back in Genesis 13:10 Lot lifted his eyes and saw the fertile plain near Sodom.  He didn’t have his sights high enough.  After this Abraham was told to lift up his eyes.  His sight was higher.  I was dwelling on two words lately, horizontal and vertical.  It is horizontal when I see men in darkness and want to lead them to Christ.  I don’t want to be too horizontal in other interests.  My only interest should be vertical  It will change my whole outlook.
