In this verse I find that James is saying, “You believe there is one God, even the demons believe and tremble.” A Christian who accepts Christ and does nothing is what James is talking about here.  I heard a preacher say, “Faith plus nothing equals nothing.” This does not mean I am working my way to Heaven, but I am doing something because of who I now am.  Christians doing nothing equals a nation with nothing done for Christ.  I am going to a verse above our verses. This verse says, “I will show you my faith by my works.”  Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s workmanship.  Could God be accused of poor workmanship when they see me?
We are given two examples in the rest of the chapter. One is Abraham who when asked to leave his homeland left not knowing where God would eventually take him to.  The other was Rahab who realized that what she needed was Israel’s God.  Her works was that she received the two messengers and sent them out another way.  Her story is written in the faith chapter, Hebrews 11.
