I remember what the Lord Jesus said to the devil in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."  I have observed that principle my whole spiritual life.  It can keep someone from the doctrine of error. Here Jesus says, "If you love me keep My commandments." Also a truth that I have observed however not always perfectly. Now Jesus said He would pray to the Father and He would send the Holy Spirit to live in them and us too. I would say forever means He will never leave us.  When Jesus said I will not leave you orphans, He means He in the person of the Holy Spirit Jesus will come to us. The three persons of the Godhead are One in purpose.
Jesus said, "He who has My commandments and keeps them and keeps them, he it is that loves me and I will love him and will manifest Myself to him." Judas (not Iscariot) said, "How are you to manifest yourself to us and not to the world?" This is as interesting question. I can worship and pray in truth of what I have in Christ and my neighbors know nothing about it unless I tell them and they get saved.  Unless they do it and it means nothing to them.  The wonderful truth of verses 23 & 24 is if we keep His word He and the Father (and Holy Spirit) will come and make their home with us. The opposite truth is in verse 24. He who does not love me and does not keep my words then this is not Jesus or the Father.
