Jonah 2:1-10

To begin this blog I quote Hebrews 10:31.  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”  In these verses we are told how well Jonah learned this lesson. More than likely none of us will be swallowed by a whale but most of us probably deserve it.  Jonah calls this the belly of hell simply meaning the grave.  Of course he is writing this after the fact so he is referring that this is like a resurrection. The reason Jonah used the expression, “I will look again at thy holy Temple” is from what Solomon said repeatedly in I Kings 8 when he built the Temple.  This is an expression of faith as we know that Jonah didn’t know the direction of the Temple in the belly of the fish.

The reason Jonah said, “I will pay that I have vowed” was probably he made a vow of service to God and realized he had failed when he refused to do what God wanted him to do.  This is a lesson for us to be faithful to do what we have promised God . The reason Jonah went away from God is that he didn’t agree with what God wanted him to do.  Our lesson and Jonah’s too, is that the Sovereign God knows exactly what is best so we may as well go along with Him.
