Paul begins this little thought as we know he wrote a letter and thankfully chapter and verses were added later for our convenience.  However the thought is what Abraham has found.  This is the beginning of the thought that Abraham was not justified by what he did but by what God promised. We might have to go back to the Ur of the Chaldees to get the substance of it. Even though Abraham was called he subjected himself to the influence of his father and for about 12 years stopped short of the Promised Land.  His response to God is what justified him.  Then sometime in that land (Canaan) God made a covenant with him. Abraham was not able to see the  promise fulfilled but almost 470 years later his descendants did.  So Abraham lived completely by faith. God is never in a hurry when it comes to His promise.  So what is important for me to learn from this? Wait on God's timing not mine. Ishmael is the product of Abraham's impatience and if not careful we could have consequences happen to us too.
